What is the role of a godparent? I took the challenge of being a godparent but I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. My godparents only visited me once every 3 months but every time with lots of gifts lol I want to be involved in my godson's life as much as I can but is that what I'm supposed to do? I heard I'm supposed to take him to church and lead him to that path. I know that if his parents were to pass away I am supposed to care for him. I just feel like I am letting him and his parents down after 4 years. I help plan his birthday parties before and during. What else should I do besides get him gifts? It's getting expensive...

1. In the olden days when people died more frequently before their child was grown, godparents were entrusted with the spiritual life of the child. Nowdays, it's more of a way to make a person an honorary family member. Instead of gifts, spend time with your godchild. Take him on a picnic, to the playground, rent a movie and watch it with him and make popcorn. Offer to babysit him when his parents want to go out once in awhile. It sounds like you are already involved with some family events such as birthday parties, so you're on the right track. Just plan more time spent together and joint activities rather than buying gifts.
