I have a lot of trouble with things like making small talk and socializing, while for some it appears it comes naturally. Does anyone have any tips/advice that works for them? If it helps, I am a 19 year old male. Thanks!
Answers:
1. talk about the persons hobbies or likes or dislikes
2. You could try scouring the news, magazines, books, the web for interesting little tidbits and topics. Keep them in mind, think about them a little, and when you have a chance or if there is a lull in conversation, bring them up. This will keep the conversation fresh and interesting -- I've discussed everything from old-fashioned, Victorian era hoopskirts to ice hotels in Canada with people. Wikipedia is great for this, photographs, the news, history, anything about other cultures, a great book, etc.
Also, ask other people lots of questions about their own lives. That way, you can get them to carry the conversation.
When you don't have much to say, don't be afraid to sit and observe and listen. There's nothing that says you have to fill in every corner of a conversation. Learn how to be comfortable with silence.
